The pig is depicted as a charming, self-satisfied animal in the bright, eye-catching illustrations. The final fold-out of the pig's head with distressed piggy eyes and flattened snout is a funny, startling 20 inches in diameter?perhaps a tad frightening to the very young. A companion to The Wide-Mouthed Frog (1995) that is not as funny, but fans of the first book will want to get their hands on this one to see what pops out at them. Faulkner purports to explain why the pig has a short, wrinkled snout. The very first pig (who is pink, portly, and grubby--flies hover around him) has an exceedingly long nose, so long that preschoolers may be inclined to think of him as an elephant. Vain about his lengthy proboscis, the pig trots about holding his nose higher and higher until he bumps into a tree and squashes his nose into the short, wrinkly shape it is today. Along the way, readers meet a few other creatures whose long noses obligingly pop up: an anteater, a swordfish, and a toucan. The last spread (to be opened with a single ``OINK!'' fortissimo) is an extreme close-up of the pig's face, 18 inches in diameter. All the protuberant pop-ups, some bright colors, and lively art--the dirt smudges that begrime the pig are cleverly made from brown fingerprints across the pink paint surface--keep everything trotting merrily along. A "pride-goeth-before the fall" morality tale that uses humor and visually enticing 3D effects for the young reluctant reader/listener, gently wrapped so it doesn't hit you over the head! Our retired teacher volunteer in my preschool classroom brought this book in, we simply read it, laughed and made accordion pig-noses at art. No blah-blah-blah from the grown-ups about "using our words" and being "kind to our friends" - just "Remember the pig?" The end.
At one time pigs had very long snouts. Here's the non Darwinian version of how pigs' noses ended up as they are today. Pig meets several long snout pop-up animals along the way. This book is similar to the Wide-Mouthed Frog pop up book with a giant fold-out for the finale.
Pop up books are a fabulous way to grab a child's attention during reading. The items in this book literally "pop out" at you!!
Probably not as big of a winner with my son as the author's "The Wide Mouthed Frog" but it is still a pretty good tale. The pop ups are fun and the end is a big pig finish that is really fun to oink with!
I bought this book used because we couldn't find it in stores, and it was in excellent shape. My daughter loves it. Thanks!
Wonderful book...just wish it was in print so that one didn't have to buy a used book. Used children's books are not gently used.
Cute but needs to be longer. After 4-5 pages the story ends. My kids love it but it needs to have more content!
The long-nosed pig was in very good condition and met our expectations. My 3-year old is enjoying it.
