This review is for the Kindle edition. The “real page numbers corresponding to the print edition†do not appear on the page, rather you have select “Page..†as a search feature. Furthermore, the numbered pages do NOT include the ~50 pages of the introduction. The introduction pages numbers have Roman numerals, which the “Page...†feature does not allow you to search for due to an unnecessarily restrictive user interface (see image).
Only his etymologies were interesting. But his angry, instable ranting against Christianity just drones on too long. Not a fool, but an utterly misguided sage. I have also read Mein Kampf and can say that Hitler certainly echoes aspects of Nietzsche in the first few chapters. Particularly his view on Jewish manipulation of the "strong". That's not an insult, but an apathetic observation.Nietzsche's biggest logical flaw stems from his chronic theophobia, he labels the "weak" as being envious of the "strong" and that vices are aspects of the "strong" that the "weak" don't have. This is easy to see in wrath or lust or greed: these are things the so-called "weak" cannot have so they label it as unworthy of having to satisfy that (per Nietzsche's reasoning), but the notion that ENVY is sickly and bad is a CHRISTIAN value. He uses moral positioning to discredit morality-- ergo invalid circular logic.Second, is the whole dichotomy of "strong" vs. "evil". No group falls into one of these categories, nor are these categories permanent statuses (nor real). If I am "weak", but I convince someone who is "strong" to do my bidding, THEN I AM NOW THE STRONG ONE, His hero of the strong is Napoleon, but anyone who has read a biography of the emperor (Vive L'Empereur) knows that he was merely an astute artillery officer who could have very easily been decapitated during the Terror in Corsica, but was lucky. He does not embody the strong nor the weak, but the reality that one can gain power and lose it and that power is not hereditary.
The book does a great job of documenting how and when morality came about, just a tough read for remembering all the facts.
Very good translation of Nietzsche best and perhaps only essential book.Not only is it his most accessible and systematic book, it contains his most original and important insight: that western morality has its origins in the historical dynamic between the noble and common classes. The Christian ethics of humility, chastity and hard work, is the result of a post-ancient "slave revolt" whereby the priestly class took over European society in the Middle Ages. Postmodern philosophers such as Deleuze and Foucault have noticed that this very moral system laid the foundation for the bourgeois or Capitalist ethics of productivism: the notion that one's moral value depends on their constant labor for human society. At the heart of this book is a powerful and original conception of debt relations as the engine of this morality, or the apparatus by which humans are instilled with a bad conscience to work as much as possible. Just as the Christian God is the symbol of the infinite guilt His subjects feel (starting with the doctrine of original sin and culminating in the bankruptcy of the self-forgiven debt that is the crucifixion of God), capital-money is the infinite debt we are all born into - the need for money to live and the need to work constantly for it.Great book for those who want to understand the world and who are sick of feeling ashamed for the joy that comes with that understanding. Nietzsche's analysis of Western society helps us identify the "ressentiment" that lies behind our desire to be good people, so that we may avoid it and seek to be better people for the honor and self-satisfaction instead. In that sense, this book is a good, if very dark, supplement to Spinoza's Ethics.
