Bravo! English teacher and blogger Denise J. Hughes has written the eBook that every author and blogger needs to read. She knows the craft and loves the art. She believes in the creative process but values the editorial process. And her writing displays the intentionality and organization she encourages.Denise starts by identifying with her fellow writers, recognizing the very necessity that stringing words together is to each of us. Then she delves into the discipline of the craft and the organization of the art.A brief dip into the mechanics of writing reminds us that good writing does not just happen by osmosis. And the ladder on the cover? It has nothing to do with climbing the ladder of success and everything to do with abstract and concrete writing. Thanks to On Becoming a Writer, I now have an English teacher's permission to use a sentence fragment every once in a while. As long as I know why I'm using it. Denise brings together the worlds of blogging and writing, showing bloggers when we can break the rules and when we can't. And for the author delving into blogging, Denise explains its more casual medium. Then there's the question that hit me right between the eyes: am I spending more time on my blog design than on my sentence and paragraph design? On Becoming a Writer: What Every Blogger Needs to Know ends with some short but powerful chapters about letting our stories simmer, the way we wield our pen, and how our stories will affect our audience and those in them. It's the latest on the short list I tell every blogger they have to read.
I've read a lot of books about writing and gleaned what I could from each. Some books have left me inspired and ready to scribble out manuscripts late into the night while others have offered me little.I love what Denise brings out in this book. She strips it down to the essentials. And as a writer, writing specifically to bloggers, the dynamics change somewhat. Yes, we are all writers whether you've got your own shelf of published books at Barnes and Noble or never written anywhere other than your journal, but she tackles a lot of the obstacles that bloggers often feel if they stink at grammar, aren't "trained" as writers, or hated high school English.Instead of regurgitating a lot of the common advice we find in writing books, she attacks it from a different approach. Writing books often make you look at the excess that is in your work but may stifle the flow of writing if you're constantly censoring your passive voice, using strong verbs, and eliminating adverbs. Those are great tips when you're ruthlessly editing, but it's hard to edit a blank page. And many times, that's what writers and bloggers face.Denise goes before all that and gets to the heart of writing. The heart that wants to communicate. The heart of a writer that just has stuff to say, then she transitions into solid writing foundations and advice, while still giving practical tips at the end of each chapter to hone your skills. From setting up an environment to help fill those pages, how to tell if you're any good, how to have a first responder, and so much more.My favorite chapters were on showing vs. telling and the age old writing wisdom that we are always to show with details while still being succinct and clear. She offers a wise response to weigh how your writing is working in each of these areas and to skillfully balance both.A gem of a book with clear points and take-aways from each chapter that you can implement right away to improve your blogging.
I have been a book-a-day reader for decades. I have read a range from classical texts in original Latin to tiny ebook pamphlets on topics as obscure as the health benefits of cayenne pepper. When I started reading your book I recognized immediately that you had a unique writing talent. You are an exceptional writer. Really, truly, masterful.I read very fast but your book asked me to slow down and let it guide me. You had something new and interesting to say, a confident perspective. I won't regurgitate what your other reviewers have already said, but I will say that I agree completely with their praise. If your book was in print, I would take a marker and cross out 'what every blogger needs to know.' In my opinion, you didn't write that book - you wrote a better one. You wrote a book called 'On Becoming a Writer' and it speaks to all writers.I hope you will self-publish this book into print (even a god-awful paperback, if you must) because I want to keep it on my shelf. When I was done reading it, I knew exactly where I would put it. It has a home waiting between 'On Writing Well' (Zinnser) and 'How to Read a Book' (Adler).I found your blog at [...]and signed up for updates. I figure that if your first book is this good, I'm willing to stick around for the second one.
While this isn't a bad book, it's a basic primer on grammar and word usage. There really aren't any tips geared toward blogging. It does have some tips about picking a place to write, setting a routine, finding your voice and writing about what you know, but you would get far more value for money by reading William Zinsser - On Writing Well. If you've ever written an essay in English class you know everything in this book. I'm sorry to say there was no insight or takeaways from this book. I give Denise full credit for the attempt, but this isn't a book I would recommend.
I have been following Denise's blog for quite some time and was thrilled to hear she was publishing an e-book. Her passion, expertise and authenticity shine as brightly through her book as in her blog. Denise successfully fills the roles of teacher, coach, cheerleader and mentor. Whether you're a published author or just considering embarking on this journey, On Becoming a Writer is a must read. You will feel empowered, inspired and more confident on your path of "writing a life of grace and truth."
