Review

Praise for Islands of the Damned“R.V. Burgin is one of those American boys who became a Marine—no small feat. He then went across the Pacific, returning home to Jewett, Texas only after helping to save the world. Read his story and marvel at the man...and those like him.”—Tom Hanks, Oscar-winning Actor and Star of Saving Private Ryan, Executive Producer of Band of Brothers and The Pacific “An honest, straightforward memoir by an honest, straightforward man. Burgin has written an unforgettable, moving description of his experiences as an infantry Marine, from New Britain to Okinawa. The result is a classic combat account. I highly recommend this book.”—John C. McManus, Author of The Dead and Those About to Die and September Hope “[A] well-written, excellently detailed personal narrative...Time is thinning the ranks of America’s Pacific War veterans. But Islands of the Damned is a taut, engrossing, haunting book that will help keep their accomplishments and enormous sacrifices alive.”—Dallas Morning News

I am a Vietnam combat veteran, navy hospital corpsman. What these troops went through is nothing like what we went through. World war II veterans have my total respect. This is an important story that all veterans will understand and appreciate. Thank you for writing it.

Great story told with clarity and factualness. Burgin was one of those guys that said little but did a lot, and thought a lot about what he had to do. It comes through in the book. A comrade in arms of Eugene Sledge, not only the experiences are familiar to readers of "With the Old Breed" but also how the experiences effected the speech, perspectives and values of these two men who fought side-by-side. Like Sledge's book, this is not a ripping yarn or war story as much as an exorcism of the memory of hell and an attempt to communicate the unbelievable circumstances they lived through to people who could never fully know nor understand.

RV Burgin gives a unique perspective on the U.S. Marine campaigns on New Britain, Peleliu, and Okinawa. Most of the book focuses on the Fifth Marines and their fight on Peleliu - a truly horrific battle that is frequently only mentioned in passing, taking a secondary position behind the more famous battles of Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. For those who have read E.B. Sledge's "With the Old Breed" - Burgin was Sledge's squad/section leader. Burgin is not as eloquent (nor as visceral) as Sledge, but his story is important to understanding and appreciating both the impact of brutal close quarters combat on the mind and body, and the unbearable burden of leading men in combat as an NCO.I definitely recommend this book in the same manner as Robert Leckie's "Helmet For My Pillow," William Manchester's "Goodbye Darkness," and Eugene Sledge's "With the Old Breed".We need to read, study, and appreciate this period of history and the stories and sacrifices of men like Burgin and his comrades.

I have read all three books about the battle for Peleliu. ISLANDS, THE OLD BREED and Helment for a Pillow. With these three points of view you get a real idea of what these men went through fighting Japan in the Pacific. All three are very good. Letter from Iwo Jima give you the Japanese view of what they went through too. More of our so called leader should read more about the history of WWII and maybe the world could learn the lessons that both wars in the Pacific and Europe taught us.

It's hard to give a book like this anything less than 5 starts, because even if the book isn't a fine piece of literature, it's a historical artifact no one but the author could produce. To write this book, you had to be there.Apart from its historical value, the book is very good. Entertaining, moving, and full of information on the way the war was fought. One of the neat things about this book is that it belongs to a small group of books written by a little group of Marines who fought in the same battles in the Pacific. You can read all of the books and see things from the perspectives of different witnesses. You can also read Stephen Ambrose and get his take.Every young American should be required to read books like this. There are too many pimply ingrates out there who need a wake-up call, to counteract the disgusting ethos of their whiny liberal teachers.

I knew about Peliliu and, of course, Okinawa but to read the story from one who was there was engrossing. I've read the Eugene Sledge book and together with this one a lot of what really happened was cleared up. He is right that there are many battles in the Pacific as well as the European theater th have been left out of the history books. I have been reading more about these lesser known battles so I can have a better understanding of what happened where my father and his brothers fought during that war and later in Korea.Well worth reading.

Mr. Burgins experienced as a Marine fighting in the Pacific during WW II is a riveting story. The horror, deprivation, and sacrifice experienced by these young American boys is truly remarkable. These are what defines the patriotism of all that fought for our freedoms. None of these young boys were looking for game or glory, they were just doing their job. Thank God for them. The details and events recalled by Mr Burgin bring to life how the Marines battled the Japanese in the most brutal conflicts of Pacific.A must read for anyone.

Superb history of the Marine expeditions, with first hand accounts of some of the hardest campaigns. If you've seen the HBO series on the Pacific war, this is the guy they talked to to make it realistic and grounded and he's still married to the Aussie girl in the movie! Going strong in the Dallas area, quite the hero but very modest. An honor to read and understand what it was like to drive the Japanese out of their conquests, hill by hill, day by day.
