About the Author
SUZANNE BROOKER received her BFA at the California Institute of the Arts in 1979, attended by invitation the Whitney Museum Independent Study program in New York, and pursued her drawing and painting studies at the School of Visual Arts. Brooker has taught drawing and painting at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, Washington since1999.

I was very excited to get this book, and spent a great deal of time going through it. However, it does not get as much use as I had hoped for. I believe a few reviewers mentioned this problem, but most of the painting tutorials in the book seem to be the same technique applied to different portraits. To be completely honest, I was hoping to learn some glazing techniques that could produce a vibrant image similar to the cover, but instead was left with several tutorials on how to create grayish looking portraits. I would have liked to seen more variety, perhaps even instruction from multiple artists. It's a good book, just not a comprehensive manual on portrait painting.
I'm pretty disappointed about this book, or may be I had too high expectation. This is about how to do oil painting, how to mix color, do under painting, glaze, etc. But there is very little about how to painting portrait. In particular, I feel the most difficult thing of painting a portrait is how to observe the 3D forms, the relationship between components, ratio / angles, etc. And this book talks very little about it if any. Maybe the content IS the most important part of old master's painting techniques, then this might be a good book. but please be aware of what you are looking for before buying it.
Portrait Painting Atelier is a wonderful and thorough book! I kept passing it up in my searches for figure painting books, and finally made the purchase. And I'm so glad I did. I don't paint in the style of the Old Masters, but the material presented made me feel like I was being ushered into a school of thoughtful learning and approaches that I had not learned in other figure classes. It's not a book you rush through and all the chapters-such as glazing - don't interest me right now. It's a book I'll refer to over and over.
The book explained color values, and combinations of compatible colors for the best skin and shadow tone results. How to layout the most effective pallet for specific portrait subjects, as well as examples of alternate painting techniques.An easy to follow tutorial for the non experienced and the more advanced oil painter. I refer to it regularly when starting anew painting.
Really good examples of ciarro -scurro technique and more. MUCH more! And inspiring too. Includes examples of work by an old teacher of mine, Domenic Cretara, among others, and very informative.
Excellent. I use the techniques described in the book, and it made a big difference in my palette.
Wonderful book for any level painter.. so much packed in every page.... Highly recommend for those who have some background and knowledge of color and want more insight into the whys and hows of becoming a better painter....
