This book has great dialogue and that, for me, was what set it apart from so many other similar novels. The characters are solid and the plot was interesting, but I really loved the way the characters speak. This novel has a strong beginning and keeps you turning pages, knowing that there is more trouble to be had. Just when one event becomes clear and seems to be nearly resolved, something else happens and you want to know more. I enjoyed read this and quickly became swept up in the plot, the descriptions and the personal lives, likes and dislikes of the characters. This was entertaining all the way to the end, and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series now. This review is based on a complementary copy from the publisher, provided through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

In the eighth Barker and Llewellyn mystery (Some Danger Involved: A Novel,To Kingdom Come: A Novel,The Limehouse Text: A Novel,The Hellfire Conspiracy (Barker & Llewelyn, No. 4),The Black Hand: A Barker & Llewelyn Novel,Fatal Enquiry: A Barker & Llewelyn Novel,Anatomy of Evil: A Barker & Llewelyn Novel) Barker and Llewellyn find themselves in a "locked room murder" - hired to act as body guards and stranded on an island off the coast of Land's End, someone is murdering the guests. Reminiscent of Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians, Thomas creates a taut mystery that kept me guessing until the final pages of the story. The gradual unraveling of the backstories of the guests (the better to discover a motive), all while guests one-by-one end up murdered added an element of suspense to a well-crafted mystery. As with the previous books in the series, Lewellyn's voice and perspective (somewhat reminiscent of Watson to Barker's Holmes) was fun - light, a bit witty, and (mostly) observant in catching details ... I was able to figure out most of the whodunit by the end of the story.I give it four stars because there was so little of the interaction and banter between Lewellyn and Barker (relative to previous stories) and even less backstory to Barker or relation and connection to contemporary events - elements that Thomas previously has intertwined into his writing, and which make the reading both more believable and entertaining. Still, I found it to be a tremendous read. I am very much looking forward to more by this author.

The format of this book is different than the other books in the series. Once you figure that out, just strap in for the ride. I loved this book! It's very Agatha Christie-esque with everyone being trapped on a basically deserted island and a mysterious sniper picking people off one by one. Barker and Llewelyn are hired as security for a house party that turns deadly and violent! My only observation -- although I love the cover of this book, to me it doesn't have much to do with the plot. I had no idea before I started the book that almost all of the action takes place in a secluded island mansion. Not that it would have affected anything since I have read and enjoyed all the books in this series, just an observation. If you enjoy this book, I recommend the other books in the series as well.

Decently written historical mystery. Characters are well outlined and drawn. Setting and backdrop for the story were compelling. So why only two stars? The implausibility of how the characters react to and then attempt to solve the mystery is god awful. It's as if their brains simply don't work. Key clues are ignored and over and over again the lead characters simply choose to do nothing allowing yet another murder to take place. Skip it

A super secret government diplomatic office asks for Barker to serve as bodyguard for the French ambassador at a clandestine meeting disguised as a house party. Barker wants to say no but the man asking is the husband of Mrs Ashleigh's good friend aka its a plot for the friend to meet him as well as a job. He can't really say no. The party is held on a tiny secluded island out in Hell Bay of Land's End. Bedlam ensues and the guests are trapped on the island with a killer. Is it politics or personal? Is it a single madman or an organized inside job? Lots of drama and ingenuity is shown while trapped on the island. I did have most of it figured out in pieces, but not really the big picture of what was going on all fit together. So just the right amount for me, doesn't come out of nowhere but also not obvious in final solution.

I am a big fan of mystery writer Will Thomas's Barker & Llewelyn series and have read the previous 7 installments in this engaging series. I was looking forward to the eighth book. Alas, the pickings are getting a bit slim and this book was a big disappointment. I give it 2.75 out of 5.00 stars. The plot was intriguing - a group of people kept penned in a mansion by a sniper who was intent on picking off all the members of an influential British family - and there were some tense moments but overall, it was too long and had long patches of false leads and an ennui that just killed any real tension or suspense. I fear that Thomas may have run out of gas on this fun series.

Not one of the best he's done, but I do like all of this series, so I wouldn't want to miss out. In fact I've got the next one sitting on my bedside stand right now. None of these are tough reads, and contain so much historical info that it makes them fun to read. In addition, I've learned a lot about the cultural biases of the time. Glad I started with the first one. I've read other 'Victorian' era mystery writers that don't seem to compare in interest.

All the Barker & Llewelyn Books are good. Will Thomas writes well, creating a vivid world inhabited by fascinating characters caught in intriguing plots. This one might have been just a little over the top, but I never lost interest or resorted to skipping pages--which is pretty common for me. I recommend this book and will read any amount of novels that he wants to write.
