As a regular visitor of The Gambia I'm always interested in books about this country. But, contrary to the title, this book is NOT about Ex-Pat Life in The Gambia. Reading it, I got the feeling that I was listening to an old, slightly arrogant, long winded, uncle. I kept wanting him to come to the point, but he didn't.In chapter 1 the author says: 'I’m going to share with you the real Gambia and the real West Africa most tourists who come here – and sadly even many ex-pats who take up residence here – never even realize exists.'Chapter 2 tells the story of how the author discovered Africa when he was seven. Info about Gambia: there are spiders, snakes, crocodiles, hippos, barracuda, mosquitoes. The main info is about Ghana.Chapter 3 deals with South Africa, racism and the dismantling of the British Empire.In chapter 4 the author takes us on a trip from airport Gatwick in the U.K. to Banjul. Lots of info about the airport. About airline security. About author's left-inguinal hernia. He mentions there are no bookshops in The Gambia.Note to author: there's an excellent bookshop in Fajara, called Timbooktoo.Chapters 5 - 13There's plenty to see during the flight. And to tell. About dug-out canoes and the people who paddled them. Why aircrafts have these small windows. That we (idiot readers?) shouldn't confuse French Guinea with French Guiana.That we have to bring extra strong sun lotions when visiting The Gambia. There's some info about local customs, food shopping, cold water sold at the roadside,It's hotter in Phoenix than in The Gambia. A brief mention of trips one can take, and then it's off to the history of Liberia. There's a story about the use of toilets on the airplane. Which leads us to toilets in The Gambia. And from there to eating. And the advice to pack a roll of toilet tissue if you're going to travel outside the tourist area.Chapter 14Wait for your luggage, while the author tells you that the standard tip for a porter is one pound or euro.Chapter 15At 94% he tells us that this is where he and I must go our separate ways. He lives like a local and whatever surplus income he has, he will use to help the local children.I hate to give a 1 star review. Especially if it's for a book written by someone who claims to be helping children in a third world country. On the other hand, the book didn't live up to it's title. It was a huge disappointment. And isn't it time we, innocent book buyers, ring the bell if we really, truly, feel cheated?
