Maayong Buntag - An introduction to the Visayan language of the Philippines by Steve W. Chadde. This is one of the best books I have found so far to learn the southern most spoken Language in the Philippines, Visayan, aka Bisayan, or Cebuano. It is very comprehensive in different subject matters including a brief Tagolag section, English to Visayan, and Visayan to English dictionary. It is littered with photos and illustrations for an easy and organized reference guide. There are even a few local points of interest and traditions mixed along with some informal but widely known taboo information on gender identity and body parts. The guide falls short in pronunciation. Though there are a few pages explaining the alphabet and pronunciation it falls short of giving a comprehensive guide throughout the book. Though I could learn a few words without the help of native speakers, once I got help, I was able to pick it up easier without being so slang and miss pronouncing the words. Though while visiting, I have noticed there is a wide difference in the pronunciation across the Visayas as is also reflected in the book, I found several areas of different spellings in different parts of the book. Hands down this book is the best book you could get if you are headed to the lower Philippines of Cebu or Mindanao or the surrounding islands.
My girlfriend is a native Filipina who speaks Bisaya as her primary language. So far, this book is the best, but it’s not perfect. She tells me many things in the book are “the old way†and she corrects a few things from it. But like I said, this book is the best so far. It’s so hard to find accurate Bisaya lessons.
The book includes both Visayan and Tagalog. It is sectioned into different categories to make it easy to study what you want. I have the digital copy but plan to get a hard copy too so I can use the book when I don't have my phone or iPad. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to learn Visayan because there is not much available for referencing that, most books or study aids only cover Tagalog which is the national language.
Love this book!!! It's so helpful. My friend is going on a mission to Cebu, Philippines and so we got him this book. This is the perfect companion! It's not like a regular dictionary or any other translating book that I've owned. It has images and great descriptions that I'm sure will really help him out.
Good book for those about to travel to the region to pick up some quick phrases. It does have a nice format - easy to flip through. Personally, I still need something a bit more structured to learn my fiancee's native language. I'll keep searching.
I have studied many languages over the years. This book is written in a logical manner and provides explanations and even cultural backgrounds. Although the focus in on Visayan, Tagalog is also included. I quickly learned several common words and phrases to practice with my friends.
I have impressed relatives with some basic phrases that I have learned from this book. I just wish there was greater emphasis on grammar and sentence structure.
It’s a good book the only book I can find. Its The language my wife speaks with friends and her family. So good to learn.
