A good read and fun mix of varied RPG types. I do not care for the odd random foul language that detracts from the reading and am unsure why the author chose them. It is rather like the gratuitous sex scenes in some movies, ill placed and unnecessary.Looking forward to the next read with some hope of a cleaner read for those who do not want polluted reads.
I was impressed with Clay in this book, and his determination to maintain his personal moral integrity. It would be so easy, in his situation, to not see the NPC's as individuals worthy of respect - as, it seems, the AKO folks did - and so much of the conflict that Clay and party face is a direct result of that.We learned a bit more about what's happening outside in this book, and it seems that Clay might be in a position to help out in both Illyria and Earth. The action in this book did feel more like a prerequisite to future adventure, rather than important in it's own right, so that was a bit disappointing, but I can't imagine how it would be different this early in the story.I am excited to see where this will go, and how the players and the NPC's will ever find a way to live in harmony - especially with what's going on outside AKO.I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
So our man Clay is still knee deep in it. Clay and his slowly growing band of heroes have been tasked with fixing problems in yet another kingdom. His attempt to grind is met with limited success before he is thrown in deeper into trouble and must concentrate on the kingdom problems. The book has good flow and slowly is releasing parts of the larger story arc both in VR and out in IRL. The flavor is still somewhat game playing vs do or die as the MC is still worried about equipment cool factor as much as utility and effectiveness. That probably will change, by next book, with some of the reveals in this book. I enjoyed this book a lot and can't wait for the next one.Full disclosure... I received an early ARC of this book for an honest review.
Where to start? I want to mention that this review will contain some spoilers, and I'll tag them as I get to them. They are needed to explain why I feel the way I do. Before I get into that, I gave this book 4 stars (3.5) because the writing was good. The story itself was good, and I like some of the characters, but there are a few things missing in this book that really takes away from it.It's dark, depressing, and there is no light. Don't get me wrong, I don't want rainbows and unicorns playing with fluffy clouds, but stories need to have at least SOME source of light in them. In this book (and started with the 1st), we learn a lot of things about this world and the world outside, and they are dark and nearly depressing. I thought, okay, good - We have a solid "end of the world" background. Same with the world of AKO - It's dark, gritty, and shows a world living in the shadow. My issue is that there is no counterbalance to this. Sure, there is like, ONE other character out there you could consider a source of Light and Hope, but he's completely absent in this book (aside from a few communications). Even then, we know next to nothing about him, and it's possible he could turn out to be a baddie too. There's no group out there representing the good. There's no deity or benevolent "other" there to help. I'm not looking for a benevolent "god" (read: AI) out there to help out the MC and give him super OP powers, but something as easy as the Knights of /insert word here/ being present to represent the "good" in the world would work.***MAJOR Spoilers for Book 1/2 Start - Skip to the next set of stars if you dont want to read specific spoilers***Aside from characters, there are other situations as well. The MC and group pretty much fail each and every single main quest and nearly everything else they do. He doesn't complete any of the main quests (to my knowledge, I can't remember a single time he does). He doesn't save the children - and no, I don't consider what happens afterwards as "saving" them. The cost of his action is astronomical, and if future books follow this line, it WILL come back to bite him.The fact that the zombies can find their bodies in the real world and kill them in game - That was another shock to the system. Maybe I'm used to LitRPGs where once their mind is uploaded, their body doesn't matter (Completionist Chronicles), but this was yet another dark issue with the book. So you have that hanging over your head, then you find out players are pretty much enslaved and tortured 24/7 on the other continent as soon as they logged in. The entire world and AI is against them. A Dev tool created to modify the game has been turned on them. I'm sure we will find out more about this, but everything above is a kick in the teeth, and there is no reprieve.*** END OF SPECIFIC SPOILERs for Book 1/2***Each of these points by themselves would be fine, you could get through it and find out how the MC combats the issue. Even altogether, they would be fine to handle if there was some beacon of hope. Hope - That's the word best described. This is a book series that, right now, has no Hope anywhere to be found. The MC and crew are just pushed from one situation to another, and I can't really describe what they do as winning. Even the very end of the book felt like a participation reward or a consolation prize. On top of this, I saw another commenter said the same thing I felt: There really aren't many RPG developments in the book. The MC takes absolutely forever to level. I can understand this if the Author wants to make this a really looooong series, but if he's not planning a 10 book series, then one of the books is going to have to go against the current norm and have our MC do some ridiculous Powerleveling. He is fighting against groups at minimum 2x his level, if not many times more (not including adds, but who counts those?).Another point that gets me with nearly all LitRPGs - The MC is a supposed "gamer", yet he makes some dumb decisions/observations in the book. Now, the author does a very good job and minimizing this compared to other books (aka Edens Gate - omfg i want to scream sometimes). For those of you who don't understand what I'm saying is this: When the author introduces a character or MC as a "gamer", then the decisions/observations in game should reflect that. The character should absolutely NOT be asking questions like what is Mana? what is Stamina? etc. (doesn't happen in this book thankfully). However, there are a few situations where the MC does something that screams at me: "That's going to bite you" - aaaaaand, it does. It's really hard to put all this into words. I just finished Book 1 and 2 back to back for the first time, and I feel down and almost depressed from the outlook. I'm sure some new "hopeful" elements may be introduced to the storyline in book 3, but I really think a better balance can be reached there. As a good example: Viridian Gate Online - This series hit the nail on the head between Dark & Depressing and Hope to get through the situation.I'm sure many of you will read my "negatives" as a standing ovation 5 star review, so you may be wondering why I gave this 3.5(4) stars - This is my personal opinion. I don't think Authors should be deducted stars just because I didn't like the theme of the book. I'm sure there are many out there that really enjoy the way this series is going. If the author can adjust these elements for book 3, I'd put the next book at 5 stars. Also, p.s. Idk if spelling words that usually end in "ed" with a "t" instead is considered grammatically correct or not, but these words absolutely RIP me out of the story. It's like trying to read a serious story/moment with the author using ain't every other sentence. It may technically be correct, but it is very jarring because it is not heard in everyday use outside of slang. I can't remember the specific words, but there were several. If I get around to it, Ill come back and edit the post with them. Some of you may have other thoughts on this, but I just wanted to say this, because it bugs the crap out of me and ruins immersion.
I loved book 1 and was very excited to read book 2. Shade is probably one of my favorite characters in the book! The story has been pretty great thus far and I loved the new details on the tattoo. I read the book over the course of a couple days and couldn't put it down, it was action packed and explained some other details pretty well. Of course, now I'm just waiting on book 3 so I can see what comes from the team having their new toy! Keep up the great work!Note: I received an advanced copy in return for a review and liked it so much that I bought a copy just to support the author :)
Strange, I enjoyed the story, the challenges of the MC and his choices .... I just found the lack of growth and development frustrating. As fantasy the book would be fine, as LITRPG... character ability and gameplay growth is essential and that is where the book falls short for me. It shouldn’t take 5 books to get to level 20 in a world with level 100 characters. It’s not “power†or “strengthâ€, it’s choices, planning, crossroads, interesting synergy etc..etc..
Arcane Kingdom Online: Dark Magic focuses more on the game then the first book, and there is a lot of plot and action for fans of the genre to enjoy. Because this book doesn’t spend time in the “real†world, I found it less dark then the first book in the series. I think that this book would work fine independently as well for readers who have not read the first book.I received a complimentary copy of this book. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Clay, Shade and the gang return! With the real world swarmed by zombies, Clay has escaped into the MMORPG world of Arcane Kingdom Online. The adventurers have traveled to a Steampunk city, tasked with solving mysterious disappearances. Great action scenes, well plotted story, and a lot of fun all around. Will be getting the third book once it comes out.
