In this well-written volume, Steven Brint describes the changes that higher education in the United States has experienced since 1980. The author also introduces the general reader to an extensive series of scientific studies about what works and does not work in the development and delivery of higher education. Dr. Brint describes several of the challenges in higher education including the general disinvestment of states in their public universities that occurred simultaneously with those universities admitting greater proportions of college-age students, and expanding the range of student services. Dr. Brint describes how public universities have responded to these challenges citing both their successes as well as several of the unfortunate trade-off that universities have made.The first chapter is a concise history of how universities have changed since 1980, and it provides context for each of the detailed chapters to follow. Chapters 2 through 9 could be read independently, depending upon the readers’ interests in such topics as: how in both the numbers and proportion of students going to college has increased, and how those non-traditional students have been accommodated (Chapter 4); the role that outside activities and enrichment programs play in today’s college experience (Chapter 5); the influence that funding agencies and other patrons have to set the agendas for public universities (Chapter 6); how and why the administrative staff have grown relative to the number of faculty (Chapter 7); how and why student instruction changed over the period studied (Chapter 8); and the effectiveness of cost containment tactics, including on-line education (Chapter 9) as universities accommodated a growing student population with declining resources. In each case, the author provides us the results of scholarly studies on the issue, many conducted by his own research team.The book should be of interest to anyone currently interested in higher education, especially if they have not been in the classroom for a while. Parents of college-age young adults will be interested in how their children’s education experience may differ from their own. Campus administrators, members of governing boards, and legislators would greatly benefit from this book because the information in it will augment their local and anecdotal understanding of higher education with meaningful, relevant data and thoughtful analyses.
As the title suggests, Brint provides a generally positive take on developments in U.S. higher education since 1980, but he is well aware of the problems associated with institutional success. He provides a novel explanation for the growth and growing prominence of U.S. universities based, first, on historically high levels of investment by the federal government, private donors, and individual families and, second, on the joint influence of three “logics of developmentâ€: academic professionalism (the traditional discipline- and department-based system of knowledge creation and transmission), technological innovation (the most important feature of the logic of the market), and social inclusion (the incorporation of once-marginalized groups through financial aid and diversity initiatives). The book’s arguments are exceptionally well supported by research Brint has evidently conducted over nearly two decades. In addition to showing how American universities succeeded, Brint provides provocative recommendations for addressing the problems of increasing cost, under-performance in undergraduate teaching, the growth of the adjunct labor force, and online competition. This book will be essential reading for anyone interested in how the American system of higher education developed in the late 20th and early 21st centuries -- and how academic and political leaders could correct the problems that festered during that era. Plus, it is well written and accessible.
